Forestry

The images on this page are actual data collected with a Spectra-View® system. They pertain to forestry but are not limited to it. There is a wide range of applications that pertain to the maintenance of forests and in the development and management of new forestry. They range from timber harvesting to monitoring wildlife and habitats; vegetation analysis, growth and disease; soil composition; tree inventory by species and watershed management.

Effects of Deforestation

The example to the left depicts a clearly defined area in the upper left hand corner of the image that has been deforested. Studies of this type allow scientists to analyze data and determine the effects of deforestation on plant, animal, and human, habitats.

Re-vegetation

The image to the left is an area that has been deforested. Remote sensing of this type could be a key element in assessment of re-vegetation after one means or another has disturbed an area.

Tree Species Inventory

This image is a good example how it is possible to actually count individual trees. Detecting different tree species and changes in vegetation over time are some other possible uses. In the upper portion of the image and between rows the different color trees are different species. Different species could also be classified and acreage of each species could be determined.
